Chapter Five

FREYA

Present day

“You want to work here? As a server?” Jasper Wallace, owner of Nook ’N’ Cranny, Breagha’s popular Main Street café, gaped at me.

Trying not to flush with embarrassment, I gestured behind me to the café’s all-glass frontage where the help-wanted notice was posted. “You’re still looking for someone, right?”

“Aye.” He rounded the counter to take me by the elbow and lead me to a small bistro table at the back. “Sit, sit.”

I did, almost tripping over the chair leg as I slumped into the seat across from him. The bustle of customers behind us made me self-conscious—or maybe it was the curiosity and shock on Jasper’s face.

He and his husband Ennis had bought the café thirteen years ago. So technically, I’d only known them a little while, but via my relationship with Forbes, the son of the owner of another important Breagha business, meant we were aware of each other. To be fair, everyone had been aware of me and Forbes.

We were the adorable teen couple of the Five Villages.

Everyone thought we’d end up together.

I guess it rather shocked them when we hadn’t, but thankfully, I hadn’t been around to witness the aftermath.

I’d left Forbes to handle that.

Guilt flushed through me, and I tried to give Jasper a breezy smile. “I’m living in Breagha. I need a job.”

Jasper frowned. “Are you here temporarily?”

Deciding to be honest, even if it cost me the work, I shrugged. “Frankly, I dinnae know. I do know I won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. I, uh”—I leaned forward—“I can’t give you a reference from my last job. I was fired.”

He raised an eyebrow. “And what was your last job, Freya?”

“I was a corporate lawyer in Glasgow.” While it had paid well enough so I had some savings to get me by, I couldn’t sit around all day doing nothing as I tried to figure out my next life move.

Now both eyebrows shot upward. “A corporate lawyer? Who now wants to be a server in my café?”

I sighed heavily. “I know it sounds mad.”

“Just a bit.”

“Is that a no, then?”

He gave me an exasperated look before throwing a quick glance at the counter. A tourist waited there for service. “Give me two seconds,” he said. “Do not move.”

When he returned a few minutes later, he slid an English breakfast tea toward me. “On the house.”

I gave him a grateful smile. “Thanks.”

“Well, it comes with strings attached. Freya Macdonald, you cannot just walk back into Breagha, into my café, ask for a job, tell me you’ve been fired, and not explain yourself. You know I’m a nosy bastard.”

I gave a bark of laughter. I’d always liked Jasper. While he was nosy, he was kind through and through. That’s probably why when I saw the notice for a job, I didn’t hesitate. Despite my embarrassment.

“Um, there’s not much of a story. I, uh, was miserable being a lawyer. It bored me. And although I’d dealt with clients I didn’t particularly like, my firm was hired by a businessman who sexually harassed me.
